March, 2010
Hey y’all. Hope everyone is enjoying the winter solstice.
Just wanted to let everybody know about some of our upcoming whatnots.
You’ll notice that for the first time in a while you don’t
see a crapload of Gilgongo shows coming up. This is because we are about to
head in to the mountains with our favorite engineer/co-producer (Angelo “my
pants are around my ankles and we’re in a crowded bar” LaPiana) and we are
going to make our 3rd record. No idea what we’re gonna call it yet
but the songs are definitely the best we’ve ever written. We all could not be
more excited about it.
We are also about to put together a live E.P./record of some
of our more recent shows. This will only be available for download. But we’ve
been piecing it together and its pretty redonk.
Lastly and most importantly, as the spring rolls around we
will be seeing the departure of our beloved Jean Paul Matiuk as he has decided
to move westward to the Windy City in search of riches. Jean Paul is/was and
will always be part of the band. We are still going to be writing together, he
just wont be our live drummer any longer. We have already found someone more
than capable of filling Jean Paul’s enormous clown shoes and we will name drop
when the time cometh. We should be playing with the new fella around June and
we will definitely be playing a few more shows while JPM is still in New York.
As you can see, there has been a lot of craziness going on
in our crazy little universe. With that, I’m out.

Jason Falkner-All Quiet on the Noise Floor
For those of you that don’t know, we are all enormous fans of this guys work and have been following his music since we were teenagers. Jellyfish, The Grays, his work with Beck and Air, not too shabby. But to be honest, Jason Falkner’s first two solo records are probably 2 of my favorite records ever. They came along at great times for me personally, but not enough for him to be catapulted into superstardom, which he certainly deserves. I haven’t really been too ga ga over much of his more recent solo efforts that he haphazardly tosses at us like Snausages. It wasn’t until last week when a friend of mine let me hear a copy of his newest record and I knew that he was back on his fucking A-game.
Released only in Japan (at the moment) on Noise McCartney Records, this new Falkner record brings him somewhere a bit different, yet with a whiff of the familiar. OK, so it’s a bit more than a whiff of the familiar, but its sooo very good. This man has such a great understanding of the history and structure of pop music it borders on ridiculous. One thing I/we love about Jason Falkner is the complexity of his songs. He has a real knack for making something sound very simple, but in reality he’s not playing what you might think he is. This record is no different. Some of the tunes on this album have been scattered through the internet in various versions for years, but all of them sound better on this that in any of their other forms. One of my favorite highlights is a Bee Bop Deluxe cover of “Jet Silver and the Dolls of Venus”. Also, more on this album than any other, the sounds he gets are incredible. Best guitar tones I have ever heard him get before.
If you are a fan of David Bowie, Elvis Costello, The Stranglers, XTC, Squeeze, The Strawberry Alarm Clock, and obviously the Beatles, buy this fucking record!!! Familiarize yourself with his back catalog as well. It’s the real deal.
